Cognitive Stimulation Therapy

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is an evidence-based therapy suitable for people with mild to moderate dementia (or mild cognitive impairment) – particularly those newly diagnosed.

The National Institute of Health & Care Excellence (NICE) endorses CST, as a large body of clinical research has shown that this non‑pharmacological therapy can have a positive effect on the brain and improve (or slow the decline of) cognitive function. Thus Memory Clinics specifically recommend CST (in combination with, or as an alternative to, medication) for people with mild to moderate dementia.

Our 14-week person-centred, cognitively-stimulating courses are designed to exercise and challenge specific areas of the brain – promoting thinking, concentration, memory and communication skills. Each structured, themed session of interesting, meaningful activities includes reading (to self and aloud), group discussion, writing, numeracy, dexterity & hand-eye coordination tasks, singing and reminiscence – using newspaper articles, puzzles, art & craft, games and group participation.

Each small CST group (of up to 10 people) meets weekly – sharing the positive experience of being part of a group where each opinion is valued and respected, and reducing isolation by giving people the opportunity to build new relationships with like-minded people. Participants are encouraged in a relaxed, friendly, social environment – focusing positively on each individual’s abilities (as opposed to disabilities) – resulting in improved confidence, mood and engagement.

Sessions are planned and led by a trained CST facilitator and assisted by team members – who support participants and promote an atmosphere of fun, interaction and community. The progress of each individual participant is monitored after every session and reviewed at the end of each course. Our CST team receive regular supervision by an NHS Clinical Psychologist.
